Living With The Dying – Anticipating Grief

It’s been a difficult few weeks for my family and it’s not over yet. My husband’s mother, a lovely women of 75 is dying. We’ve known it was coming for quite some time – Dianne is a life-long smoker, with all of the health issues that can accompany this life choice. She has emphysema, COPD and a recent diagnosis of lung cancer.

Motivating Teenage Students

My children are smart. There’s no doubt about that. My son, 14, in particular, because he has some issues with ADD and anxiety, has been tested every which way and his intelligence and capacity to learn were extremely high – just shy of the so-called genius level.

Parenting a Gay Daughter.

My daughter is 17.  She’s smart, lovely and has a razor-sharp wit.  Her hair, currently cotton-candy pink, changes color at whim and she wears them all well.  She could work harder on her studies, doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up and covers any piece of paper left in her vicinity with drawings of anime characters – many her own. She plays a mean viola. She is also gay.

The Dance of Homework

Helping my kids, especially my son, with homework can be a very challenging thing for me. It’s not the will – it’s the way.  Some of it’s just fine: Quizzing on biology? No problem at all! Hey, I was a biology major in college and I know this stuff. Let’s go meiosis!  Math? Easy-peasy – go ask your dad because he remembers ALL of his high school numbery stuff.  Writing an essay?  Well, that’s a different story altogether.
