Oh my gosh, homework! Even though most of us, as parents, have done our fair share of homework we still have to do more, well not really. We do have to monitor and insist on it getting done. If we are parents that are invested in our children’s education we sit with our children during their studies, or we are available to them.
I have found that my younger child, 7 and my tweens, 9 and 11, find it helpful to sit at the dining room table doing their homework with me with them. My teenagers, on the other hand , barricade themselves in their rooms and only come out for nourishment and to use the facilities. (Oh that is what you look like! Go figure!)
As a kid I hated homework, what kid didn’t? BUT as a parent I see the necessity of assigning homework to students. School is not the only place that we learn. Learning is a life long thing. We learn from love, from friends, from nature, from television and from the internet. All of life is a learning experience. Homework teaches them that it is their responsibility to keep learning, always. I was stunned, because of my feelings about this, and flabbergasted when I read an article about homework; the opinions of The President of France.

To paraphrase, President Hollande believes that children should not have homework because it makes the” playing field” of educational success unfair. What? He believes that it is unfair that some students have engaged and invested parents and others don’t. Huh? So he believes that removing homework will do….. what? If a student is unlucky enough to have parents that are not involved in their education, they are probably not involved in their lives either, so they are already behind. Parent involvemen,t from the very beginning, is key to a child’s success in school and life. So how would removing homework change anything?
Oh wait! That is not ALL of it! Really! He thinks that a longer day at school is the answer to no homework! Excuse me? France already has one of the longest school days in all of Europe! The students often leave school around 5pm or 6pm. Really? So in essence he is removing the children from their parents and making them “wards of the state”. No way! I would be having a major hissy fit on that! And my children would be homeschooled!
Obviously this is an editorial, aren’t all blogs? But when did it come the leaders of a country’s job to raise their citizens children? President Hollande was voted into the presidency on May 06,2012, and ran under the Socialist party.

In a democratic country it is for the people, by the people and of the people. Now I am not a political person. I vote when there is a vote and do my American duty. But really that is the limit of my involvement. Of course I research who should be voted for…. But I don’t like getting into debates about politics I usually just sit and listen or walk away. I just don’t know enough and I don’t want to know enough to debate and argue. So I am not looking for debates or arguments. I am just stating my opinion on this, personally, ridiculous thinking of a public official, voted for by the French citizens.
I don’t know….illegal homework? longer school days? Why not just have all boarding schools and get rid of the parent all together? What do you need parents for anyway? Personally I like my children and I love to spend time with them. If their school day was any longer, they go to school from 8am-3pm now, I would not be very happy. I need my kiddo fix. I HAVE to see them, be with them, love on them. That is what being a parent is, wanting to be with your kids.
