Planning for college is very important with any high school student who will be a senior soon. Today my son and I visited Texas State Technical College in Waco, TX. We learned a great deal while we were there and now have a plan for making sure he is able to attend school there in the Fall of 2014!

Music Links can be used by people wearing hearing aids or cochlear implant processors to listen to music on their iPods or MP3 players. They can also be plugged into laptops or iPads. As you see in the picture to the left, it is an actual “hook” that is placed behind the person’s ear, resting on the ear. The hearing aid or processor is then set to a telecoil setting and the sound from the device that the Music Link is plugged in to is sent to the hearing aid or processor. The first time Elijah used his Music Links his eyes just lit up! He was so excited to be able to hear!

Traveling is not easy with children and traveling with a hearing impaired child adds a few extra challenges. This hasn’t kept us from traveling, but I have learned to be prepared.

I took out an accident insurance plan six years ago no knowing if I would ever need it, but having two boys thought I eventually would. Thankfully, we had only had to use it once for my husband(since divorced) until ten days ago. My oldest slammed his finger in the car door and we had to take a trip to emergency room.

I have played the health insurance game since the day Elijah was born eight weeks premature. He came home on oxygen and has been on medication since the day he was born. He has also had two surgeries. Today was another day of playing this game!

Elijah wears two cochlear implant processors and he uses Skin Its to decorate them. These make his “ears” more cool for him! They also help us determine which processor goes on which ear!

Raising a deaf child, Cochlear implants batteries are very important in our house. Elijah’s cochlear implant processors require three 675 zinc air batteries to operate. I have to always be sure to have several packages of batteries on me, because we just never know when they may die and he can’t hear.

My son Elijah has Tourette Syndrome and today is the start of Tourette Syndrome Awareness month. Tourette Syndrome is a very confusing disorder and it has been important for me as a parent to educate as many people as I can about this disorder.

Jacob submitted at least a dozen applications for jobs over a month ago. Looking for his first job, he went in for an interview two weeks ago and a drug test this past Friday! He is hoping to hear something soon and get started!

Elijah receives services from special education so we have an annual Individualized Education Plan(IEP) meeting. I will be attending one of these such meetings tomorrow.

Elijah had the chance to attend a camp for children with Tourette Syndrome. He had never been away from me for any length of time, where I couldn’t talk to him over the phone. This was an experience for both of us.
