The return of the new school year is right upon us. Not only does this bring a new schedule to the daily routine, but also a new routine to our evening schedules. School, unlike most work schedules, not only requires our children to put in a whole day of work, but also additional work time at home. Create some homework success strategies at the beginning of the school year to help with the homework battle. I believe one of the best sources of freedom, we, as parents, can give ourselves, is a negotiated battle plan.

Summer is in full force, and we are enjoying the warmth and activities that it allows, but taking a quick peak at the calendar reminds me that the start of school is right around the corner. Here in Indiana, my children begin on August 1, wow!! Let me encourage you to spend some family time creating some vision for this next school year. Set the school year up for success, by seeing and defining what success would look like.

I was reading an article recently about stress, and how sleep helps reset our mind for the next day; It caused me to think about some of the off the wall dreams I have. There appears to be no rational way for all of the people, places, and emotions to be connected, but, when I think of a dream as a reset, I understand much better.

I began my morning much later than normal today. Generally, I am up a couple of hours before anyone else in the family, but today I slept in. As I ventured up the stairs, I heard the hum-mm of the dishwasher already running, and then discovered the kitchen already clean.

We choose to meet the physical needs of our children daily. With intent, we purchase homes and food for their daily use, provide clothing and seek medical attention when needed. But, physical needs are just one component of real parenting; we must also parent the child’s mind, will, and emotions just as intentionally.

Goal focused parenting of the strong-willed child requires us to mold the will, without breaking the spirit. As the old adage goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. I like to parent with that perspective in mind.
